Wellbeing

The Wellbeing service is here to help with the emotional and physical effects of a cancer diagnosis.  A course of sessions with an experienced therapist or counsellor can give you the valuable time you need to talk and relax.

Our classes and groups offer a welcome diversion for many and are a great way to meet other people who understand exactly what you are going through.

Our services are also available to relatives and carers and many people find that the support they receive helps them to cope at a difficult time.

Wellbeing
  • Our volunteer team of qualified complementary therapists offer a range of therapies that can help you feel better.

Whether that’s by reducing stress and tension, relaxing and easing sleeplessness, or giving you coping skills to deal with anxiety.

If you are being treated for cancer, some complementary therapies can provide symptom relief for pain and sickness as well as helping with fatigue.

We have a wide range of complementary therapies available all of which will be carried out by qualified and experienced practitioners.

    Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the controlled use of essential oils to promote physical, psychological and emotional wellbeing. Treatments are usually offered in the form of a gentle massage after a holistic assessment by your therapist.

    Alexander Technique

Alexander Technique provides a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination.  It teaches you how to create a new balance in the body by releasing unnecessary tension and only using the appropriate amount of effort for any particular activity thereby giving you more energy for all your other activities.

    Bowen

Bowen therapy, or the Bowen technique, is a non-invasive, complementary therapy.  It targets certain points on the body with gentle rolling movements to help it balance, repair and reset itself. Clients may also experience energy recovery, a reduction in pain and an improvement of function following treatment.

    EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)

Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT) is a simple and easy-to-use technique and can help to promote effective relief from stress, anxiety and symptom relief through tapping on certain energy points.

    Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy involves reaching a deep and natural state of relaxation, which helps to relax and calm the body and mind.  The therapist will help you to enter a very relaxed state and will take you through a relaxation routine.  At all times during a session you will still have complete awareness and control.

    Indian Head Massage

This is a massage technique which works on the shoulders, arms, neck, scalp and face.  It can help ease tension, promote relaxation and help to reduce stress.  This therapy can be performed with or without the use of essential oils.

    Life Coaching

Life coaching helps you to recognise your self-worth and to make positive changes in your life. Our life coach will support and encourage you throughout the process, helping you to keep to your objectives and targets.

    Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a non-invasive technique which helps to remove excess fluid and waste products from the body quickly.  This is done through a specialised form of massage which helps stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage the flow of fluid out of the affected area into an area that drains normally.

    Massage

Massage can help to promote physical and mental relaxation and stimulate the body’s vital energy to encourage circulation and lymphatic flow.  The therapist will adapt the techniques used to suit your individual needs after your initial consultation.

    Podiatry

Podiatry can also be known as Chiropody and is the treatment of foot and lower limb problems such as corns, calluses, ingrown toenails and arthritis.  Podiatrists can also help with possible side effects caused by cancer treatment.

    Reflexology

This is a specialised form of foot massage working on the reflex areas of the feet to promote relaxation, relieve stress and tension by stimulating the body’s own healing mechanism.  Many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the body and mind.  Our volunteer Reflexologists are qualified and experienced practitioners.

    Reiki

Reiki is a system of ‘hands-on’ therapy that works to harmonise and balance all aspects of your wellbeing; physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually thus promoting the body’s own natural healing process.  All can benefit from the relaxing and re-energising effects of this gentle therapy. Our volunteer Reiki therapists are qualified and experienced practitioners.

  • Counselling

Our volunteer team of qualified Counsellors and our Counselling placement volunteers provide a confidential counselling service.  All personal information disclosed is confidential to the Centre.  No information is disclosed to a third party without the permission of the person concerned except in exceptional circumstances such as the safety of an individual or a legal requirement.

Counselling offers people an opportunity to speak to someone who is not involved in any other way in their lives about matters which may be worrying or distressing for them.  One of the most important aspects which our volunteer counsellors can offer is time on a regular basis to focus on inner thoughts and feelings.  The counsellor does not give advice but will listen and discuss the courses of action which are open to the individual.
