Gift of Time

Our team of volunteers are an invaluable part of our organisation. With their dedication and commitment we are able to offer a wide range of support and services to people affected by cancer in the local area.

You can donate as little or as much of your time as you wish, below are details of all the current volunteer opportunities that we have available but if you have something in mind that isn’t there give us a call anyway we would love to hear from you.

Gift of Time
  • In order to provide practical and emotional support, volunteer drivers are needed to transport people affected by cancer to cancer related hospital appointments and also to the Centre to which they are assigned (e.g. Bradford, Skipton or Wakefield) for day to day activities to help promote wellbeing.

    • Can you spare one day a week?
    • Daytime only
    • Own car is essential
    • Mileage allowance paid

  • Are you qualified Complementary Therapist?

    We are looking for volunteers to join our team of Complementary Therapists at our centres in Bradford, Skipton and Wakefield.

    You will work closely with cancer patients and carers/relatives providing therapeutic & emotional support in a safe & friendly environment.

  • We are looking for experienced and qualified counsellors to join our existing team at our centres in Bradford, Skipton or Wakefield.

    You will work closely with cancer patients and carers/relatives providing counselling support in a safe & friendly environment.

  • We are looking for volunteers to join our Image Solutions Team at our Bradford and Skipton Centres.

    As an Image Solutions Volunteer you will work closely with cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy and seeking support for hair loss.

    Through one-to-one appointments and working in pairs you will:

    • Offer information and guidance on how to care for your scalp as a result of chemotherapy and following hair loss.
    • Advise on scarves, hats and other headwear which are available.
    • Demonstrate how to tie headscarves and utilise headwear.
    • Recommend items that will suit a person’s personal needs.
    • Full training will be given prior to commencement.
    • All Image Solutions appointments take place on a Friday afternoon in Bradford and are covered on a rota system with the other members of the team.
    • Skipton Centre appointments are booked on an adhoc basis and cover is arranged within the team

  • We are now looking for new board members to join our board of trustees, to further develop the charity whilst ensuring that we keep within our charitable objectives.  We are looking for a trustee who is local to one of our 3 areas of operations – Bradford, Skipton or Wakefield. 

    Applicants must be able to regularly attend the meetings, contribute constructively at the meetings based on their experience and promote the charity within the local community.   The right person could make a real difference by contributing to and facilitating important decisions and by promoting the board and the charity in the local community and by communicating well with the staff, volunteers and clients. 

    The board meet every 6 – 8 weeks for a couple of hours with lunch provided with occasional off site meetings maybe once or twice a year to discuss strategy and risk.  Trustees will also be invited to appropriate events too e.g. yearly volunteer events.

  • The role of the Meet and Greet Team is absolutely invaluable to the service we provide at our centres in Bradford, Skipton & Wakefield.  Centre staff can be safe in the knowledge that the Hub is covered and support is there for anyone coming into the centre for a group, an appointment or as a new visitor.

    Duties of the meet and greet team

    • Friendly face, first point of contact to welcome visitors to the centre
    • Ensure everyone signs in and is offered refreshment
    • Be available for anyone who is waiting for an appointment or who has called in

  • We are looking for volunteers to become ‘Friends of Cancer Support Yorkshire.’  This is an interesting, flexible and varied role which will enable you to develop positive and rewarding networks with local community members and increase your personal development.
    Typical tasks can include:

    • Planning, organising and promoting awareness raising and potentially fundraising events.
    • Collecting funds on behalf of the charity and looking after the collection tins.
    • Attending group meetings.
    • Acting as an ambassador through building community networks.

    If you are passionate about helping local people affected by cancer, have good communication and organisational skills, can work as part of a team and are honest and reliable this role would be perfect for you.

  • We are looking for Ambassadors to represent cancer Support Yorkshire in the local community.  The role is varied and flexible depending on your own experience, commitments and skills but main duties may include; attending events on the organisation’s behalf, speaking to groups about our work, networking with businesses and supporting the Fundraising Department in various ways.  It is an interesting, flexible and varied role which will enable you to develop positive and rewarding networks with local community members.

    Typical tasks include:

    • To attend community fundraising events on behalf of Cancer Support Yorkshire’s fundraising team. This may include speaking about our work, attending cheque presentations, networking at business events or speaking at a local school or Church about the services we provide.
    • To arrange talks and to attend community events in your local area to raise awareness about our work.
    • To encourage groups at each talk to support us by promoting ways to get involved, particularly through our community fundraising initiatives.

    So if you are passionate about helping local people affected by cancer, comfortable talking to groups of people, have the ability to travel around your local area and are proactive and confident in developing your own networks and securing talks we would love to hear from you.

  • The Volunteer Shop Assistant role is an interesting, flexible and varied role which will enable you to develop new skills.  Based at our Preloved shop in Skipton you will report to the Shop Manager and help raise valuable funds for Cancer Support Yorkshire.

    Main duties may include:

    • Processing deliveries
    • Stock room maintenance and other stock room duties
    • Ironing and steaming new stock
    • Assisting with the stock room
    • Making clothing donations look their best
    • Cleaning including vacuuming/dusting
    • Ensuring that the floors are kept clean and tidy at all times
    • Replenishing toiletries and cleaning products as required
    • Adhering to health and safety at all times
    • Be willing to undertake other duties which may arise
