 Andrews Hope Campaign Poster final

Andrew’s cancer journey started with a visit to the dentist, he is now a Patron for Cancer Support Yorkshire and hopes that his story of optimism will inspire others…

My cancer journey started after a visit to my dentist where she found something strange on my
Tongue, this eventually ended with me going to St Lukes hospital to the Maxillofacial ward.
Two small operations on my tongue, no problems, if that was all I had to put up with I was ok with my brush with cancer and that was it, so I thought…

8 months down the line and the consultant found a lump in my neck that turned out to be
Cancerous nodes which had to come out. Another operation and 22 staples in my neck (I think to hold my head on), this gave me a nice Frankenstein look. The operation was successful but what followed was radiotherapy and chemotherapy to ensure the cancer had completely gone.

It was half way though my treatment that I came into contact with Cancer Support Yorkshire
This was when I realised how lucky I was compared to a lot of other people who were going through a similar thing.

I had so much support from my family and friends that my attitude to it all was very positive and this greatly helped me get through the whole process quickly - to be able to come out the other side with hope and optimism you definitely need support.

But for those people who don't have this kind of support:
Where do they go?
How do they cope?
Who do they turn to?
Support is one of the best medicines to help you through this trying time and it’s not available on prescription.

This is where Cancer Support Yorkshire is invaluable as they are there for both the patients and their families to lean on. They provide support when things get tough and ensure you’re not alone in what can be a very difficult period. They offer practical support too and can help in guiding you in the right direction whether it is with finances or information - they are there to talk to. Everything is done in a professional, caring and compassionate manor but always with a smile.

Their support can help towards maintaining a positive mental attitude, which is vital in ensuring you achieve the ultimate goal of getting better.
